RST Special Metals, a division of Siyanda Smelting & Refining (SSR), situated on an 8.8-hectare site in the Industrial area of Middelburg, Mpumalanga is a well-established melting, smelting, de-carburising, refining and granulation plant, which produces top quality special graded material as well as granulated product for the metals industries.  Siyanda Smelting & Refining (SSR) is a subsidiary of a Siyanda Resources company which has an interest in platinum group metals (PGMs), chrome, base metals, energy, and battery metals.  All their assets and projects acquired are on a long-term basis, strategically positioning Siyanda Resources to be part of the mainstream companies that will supply much-needed metals and minerals for the future.

RST has been involved in the smelting of a wide range of concentrates, metals and related by-products throughout the last decades and is a functional operation with the appropriate legal and compliance framework in place. The facility operates electric arc and induction furnaces, and a water granulator to produce metal shot with power generated on site via dedicated gas-to-power engines.

RST is a future-focused smelting facility that deploys a unique, disruptive PGM processing business model and has a proven track record of processing PGM concentrate and base metals to produce granulated alloy product.

Siyanda Smelting & Refining acquired RST Special Metals from Jubilee in 2015 and in 2019, RST Special Metals started smelting trials on low platinum group metal (PGM) concentrate grade and high chromic oxide ore.  The trials proved successful and allowed RST to enter into long-term offtake agreements with suppliers to further process low PGM concentrate grade and high chromic oxide ore.  RST was also able to enter into a long-term offtake agreement of their product with a major PGM mining company in South Africa.

RST Employs more than 200 employees (including contractors), ranging from plant personnel, operators, laboratory personnel, safety specialists, and specialists in the fields of engineering and metallurgy.  RST is led by a dedicated team of executives who report directly to the Siyanda Resources board, and the business is supported by a solid administration team and human resources department.”

RST Special Metals ensures that its 24-hour operation continues uninterrupted thanks to Power Alt - a 10.2MW Gas Fired Power Generation Facility.

Power Alt is located at RST's smelting facility, and this means that during periods of national power interruptions, RST can continue to operate uninhibited.

Power Alt is powered by four JGS620 Jenbacher engines.
